UK Opens Competition Inquiry into Cartamundi’s Recent US and Spanish Acquisitions

The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have opened an inquiry in advance of Cartamundi’s acquisition of the United States Playing Card Company, which also owns the Spanish playing card company, Naipes Heraclio Fournier.

The Belgium card company announced the merger this summer and expects to close the deal this year.

CMA will investigate whether the new company will result in “substantial lessening of competition” with UK markets. The inquiry will have until December 9 to rule in favor of the merger, or expand the investigation.
